Usque Ad Sidera LLC (“UAS”) is a young entity formed in 2010 by Luca Escoffier in Seattle, the heart of information technology and medical research. We have great ambitions, and you can tell that from our name, “usque ad sidera”, which, in Latin, means “up to the stars”. We have built a strong background in intellectual property, and we do believe that we can help young high-tech companies, inventors and research centers face the grand challenges of our time. Usque Ad Sidera LLC is an innovative company that bridges the existing gap between research and its valorization. UAS helps innovators and inventors achieve their goals and favor the smooth exchange of knowledge. The company, together with its affiliates, and partners, provides integrated services to help ideas reach and conquer the market.


Luca Escoffier – CEO
Luca graduated in law from the University of Parma in 2001, he then earned a Master of Laws in intellectual property law in 2003 (WIPO). After some years spent in law firms and in an Italian nano-biotech company, he moved to Seattle in 2008 to work as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Washington (“UW”) where he also earned in 2010 a Certificate in Business Administration from the Foster Business School. Luca, from 2008 to 2010, was one of the editors of the RCLIP IP precedent database, which has been developed by Waseda University, under the direction of Professor Takabayashi, in conjunction with the Center for Advanced Studies in Intellectual Property (“CASRIP”), directed by Professor Takenaka at UW. Luca is completing his doctoral thesis at Queen Mary College, University of London, he also writes regularly for international journals on intellectual property law, and he is a Fellow of the Stanford-Vienna Transatlantic Technology Law Forum. Luca was one of the four experts in intellectual property law that have been selected in 2009 as Fellows at the Institute of Intellectual Property in Tokyo, which is sponsored by the Japanese Patent Office, to write a report on knowledge transfer activities in Europe and Japan. Luca is a Singularity University alumnus (GSP10) and from 2010 to 2011 he worked as an external licensing manager for the University of Trieste (Italy). Finally, since 2011, he is the CIO of Qurami, an Italian startup involved in the time saving business.


William Herbert – Company Secretary
William is an attorney who offers practical and sophisticated legal advice for clients who are on the cutting edge of the intersection between technology and commerce. William has over ten years of law firm and in-house experience structuring complex cross-border transactions. He has drafted multi-million dollar patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret license agreements, research collaboration agreements, corporate asset purchase agreements and joint venture agreements for leaders in the aerospace, automobile, biotechnology, software, home appliance and telecommunications industries.  William speaks, reads and writes business and legal Japanese, and is admitted to practice law in the states of Georgia, New York, and Washington.

Léa Y. Chang External Advisor for Asian Markets
Lea graduated in law from Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea) in 2000, she started a software venture in Korea with friends. After this experience, she went to Japan with the full scholarship from the Japan Government, and earned a Master of Laws in intellectual property law in 2005 (Hitotsubashi University). She completed her doctoral studies at Waseda University. Also, she worked for a Japanese Pharmaceutical company and a Music Licensing company. As to her research experience, she worked for the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI), the Research Center for the Legal System of Intellectual Property (RCLIP) as a Researcher, and for the House of Representatives of Japan (Research Bureau) as an expert where she gave IP-related expert opinions to the members of the House. She taught IP law at J.F.Oberlin University and Rikkyo University, and now she is an Assistant Professor of Law at Tokyo City University. Léa writes regularly for international IP journals, and she is very passionate about comparative law, especially between U.S./EU and Japan/Korea.

Efrat Kasznik – President
A valuation expert with more than 15 years of economic and financial consulting expertise, Efrat Kasznik has led complex valuation and litigation engagements for businesses ranging from Fortune 100 companies to start-ups. Working across a diverse range of industries— automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, industrial chemicals, software, hardware and entertainment— she performs business valuations and valuations of intangible assets for situations such as mergers and acquisitions, financial reporting, technology commercialization decisions, tax compliance, transfer pricing and litigation damages. Prior to founding FVG, Efrat was Senior Vice President of ICMG, a consulting firm specializing in intellectual asset management, where she led the valuation practice, working with corporations such as Disney, Boeing and Nissan. She moved on to become a Director with LECG (NASDQ: XPRT), a global management consulting firm, where she was recruited to create a new practice area focused on Intellectual Asset Management. After leaving LECG, Efrat co-founded Ennovationz, a residential energy efficiency consulting firm specializing in developing analytical energy models. Her background also includes accounting and financial management positions, including serving as Chief Financial Officer at AcrossWorld Communications, a Silicon Valley start-up engaged in building global data communication networks. She received her MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. in Accounting and Economics from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.


IP Checkups, Inc.
Matthew Rappaport – Co-Founder, President
With a strong background in research and analysis, Matthew Rappaport has become one of a handful of people with expertise at generating, assessing, and interpreting reports that highlight relationships between competitive patent portfolios. Beginning in 1999, Matthew began exploring the AurekaR software which is considered to be the pre-eminent platform for visualizing competitive patent landscapes. Matthew is an expert at manipulating the software to produce pictures and graphics that reveal important correlations and relationships between patent portfolios. Working closely with Irving, a seasoned patent attorney and co-inventor of the AurekaR software, Matthew is able to quickly analyze and interpret relationships inherent in competitive patent landscapes. He excels at presenting simplified, relevant conclusions that offer business and investment professionals in R&D, business development, finance, marketing, competitive intelligence and legal departments valuable insight into the nature and evolution of technological innovation. These studies enable people to literally see how their portfolio stacks up against the competition. Matthew leads interdepartmental workshops for companies to help them align their R & D activities with their Intellectual Property (IP). Thus, converting their IP into strategic business assets. Matthew has performed a variety of studies in the fields of Biotechnology and Optoelectronics including specific projects related to medical devices, analytical chemistry, drug delivery, gene therapy, cell expression, and light-emitting diodes.

Maximiliano Marzetti, LLM, LLM
UAS Exclusive Partner for Latin America
Maximiliano is a qualified Attorney-At-Law, Patent and Trademark Attorney and Mediator in Argentina.
He regularly advises Latin American start-ups on IP issues and dispute resolution, had worked as IP Counsel for the Winter Olympic Games held in Turin in 2006 (Italy), had been appointed patent valuation consultant by the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina and has trained officials of the Industrial Property Office of Uruguay.
Maximiliano also teaches courses in “Intellectual Property” and “Law and Economics” at the Latin American School of Social Sciences (FLACSO) and is a Research Fellow at the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO).
He obtained an LL.M. in Intellectual Property from Turin University/WIPO Academy and another LL.M. in Law & Economics from Hamburg and Bologna Universities and speaks Spanish, Italian, English, French and Portuguese.

Ekidna Design Bureau
Domitilla Biondi  Founder, President
Graduated in Graphic Design in 1996 with some of the best italian professors as Achilli & Ghizzardi, Marcello Francone (Skira) and AG Fronzoni, Domitilla showed immediately her attitude to approach projects as a pioneer, embracing the way of New Media Design and then founded Project Ekidna, a research collective project, which won few awards (i.e. Biennal of Young Artist of Europe and Mediterreean, 1999) and got published and quoted in the international press (Reload Browser 2.0 by Liz Faber, New Master of Flash vol1 ed. Friendsoft, etc). Meanwhile, she build up her team friendliness and leadership attitude by working in the Mondadori’s NewMedia Lab (one of the major Italian publishers), and she had for one year the creative direction of and enriched her experience by working 2 years in London for blue-chip companies as Empire Design and BlackSun plc. In 2004, she started her own multidisciplinary studio, back in Milan,  and added to her experience a few years of teaching at the school where she graduated, the Accademia di Comunicazione, in Milan. Ekidna Design Bureau worked on and for: Moby Lines, Reply, Visconti Banqueting, Did Studio &, Assonime – Associazione delle SpA italiane (in collaboration with afterpixel), Assconsult, Orza Minore, Listino Immobiliare, CGIL Monza e Brianza, Infocamere, P&B Yachting, CCSI  Camera di Commercio Svizzera in Italia Galleria Cernaia, Studio d’arte Cannaviello, Varese Risorse, RCS Libri, Romeo Gigli, 2GO fashion label.
